State-Specific Rent-to-Own Disclosures

Updated June 1, 2026

Rent-to-own is regulated at the state level, and requirements vary. The notes below are informational and are not legal advice. Your written agreement with the funder will contain the binding, state-specific terms. See also our full rent-to-own disclosures.

California

California residents: rent-to-own agreements in California are governed by the Karnette Rental-Purchase Act (Civil Code §§1812.620 et seq.). Your written agreement with the funder will contain the disclosures required by that Act, including a disclosure box showing the Total of Payments, Cost of Rental, Cash Price, Amount of Each Payment, Number of Payments, and Rental Period. Your agreement will also disclose your early purchase rights and reinstatement rights as required by California law. California limits the cash price and the total of payments that may be charged; your funder is responsible for complying with those limits.

New York

New York residents: rent-to-own agreements in New York are governed by Personal Property Law Article 11 §501 et seq. The funder will provide written disclosures in the format required by that Article, including a disclosure box affixed to the merchandise. Your agreement will disclose your early purchase rights and reinstatement rights as required by New York law.

Florida

Florida residents: rent-to-own agreements in Florida are governed by Florida Statutes §559.9231 et seq. The funder's agreement contains the disclosures required by that statute, including the statement that the agreement is a rental-purchase agreement and not a credit transaction.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island

Massachusetts and Rhode Island residents: state-specific early-purchase formulas and consumer-protection rules apply. The funder's agreement contains the state-specific terms. Massachusetts is among the more consumer-protective rent-to-own regimes; please read your agreement carefully before signing.

Vermont

Vermont residents: please note that some national lease-to-own providers do not currently serve Vermont. We are working to confirm Vermont availability with our funder partners. If a Vermont application is accepted, the funder's agreement will contain the state-specific terms.

Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas

Residents of Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, and Texas: state-specific disclosure and contract-format requirements apply. The funder's written agreement will contain those state-specific terms. For North Carolina residents: the final payment under your agreement may differ in amount from the regular monthly payment as required by North Carolina law.

Minnesota, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Wyoming

Rent-to-own is not currently available for delivery to Minnesota, New Jersey, Wisconsin, or Wyoming. We may be able to connect you with cash-purchase options through a local dealer.
