Buying a Used Shed: What to Look For
Last updated June 2, 2026
A used shed can cost less than new and still last for years if it's well built. Check the floor, roof, doors, and for any rot or pest damage, confirm it can be moved and delivered, and ask whether rent-to-own is available on pre-owned buildings.
Pre-owned and returned buildings often sell at a discount to new. With a careful inspection, a used shed can be an excellent value.
What to inspect
- Floor and frame — step inside; the floor should feel solid, with no soft spots or sag
- Roof — look for worn shingles, leaks, or daylight from inside
- Doors and windows — they should open, close, and latch squarely
- Rot, rust, and pests — check corners, the base, and any metal hardware
- Overall square — doors that bind can signal the building has shifted
What affects the price
Age, size, materials, condition, and any options (windows, shelving, ramps) all factor in. A repainted or refurbished building may cost a bit more but save you work.
Delivery still matters
A used building still has to be delivered and set level, so the same site prep and access rules apply. Confirm the dealer can move and set it at your location.
Can you rent-to-own a used shed?
Often, yes. Many dealers and funders offer rent-to-own on pre-owned and returned buildings, sometimes called repo sheds — see our repo sheds guide. Ask the dealer what's available.
